Jan Smith

Keynote Speaker

Jan Smith loves people and speaks straight to the heart! She is mother of 4 adult children, manager of the family farm and businesses, and mentor of many young moms. Jan began homeschooling in 1989 in rural Louisiana where no one had heard of homeschooling. After 2 other families joined her, she began a 3-family co-op. Learning together at home was key to the strong family relationships the Smiths experience today. Upon graduation from homeschool, all 4 children completed university studies on scholarships. Because of the positive impact on family relationships, she works to protect freedom to home educate for future generations through her leadership on her state and national homeschool organizations, as well as by equipping others through speaking at conferences. She also loves teaching God’s word at women’s events. Jan mentors young mothers in her community through a weekly Bible study and monthly parties in her home for the couples. Playing keyboard at church, reading to the grandchildren, riding horses, and growing flowers and vegetables keep her life after homeschooling far from empty.

Learning Your Way: Unschooling Panel

Saturday, May 16 – 11:15am-12pm

Amber O'Neal Johnston

Keynote Speaker

Amber O’Neal Johnston is a leading voice on incorporating diverse perspectives into traditional curriculum and creating a culturally rich home environment. She shares insights on education, living books, and worldschooling at HeritageMom.com and on Instagram @heritagemomblog. A frequent speaker, podcast guest, and contributor to the Wild + Free homeschooling community, Amber is widely respected in homeschool and parenting spaces. Raised in a public school family, she never expected to embrace homeschooling until discovering Charlotte Mason’s philosophy. Inspired by its potential to create a lifegiving home, she began homeschooling her children. However, she soon noticed a lack of representation of Black stories and achievements in her curriculum. Determined to change this, Amber blended traditional classics with culturally rich, “lifegiving” books to better reflect her children’s identities. She now helps other families create inclusive and meaningful learning environments through her writing, speaking, consulting, and nonprofit work. Amber often sums up her approach with a smile: “In my house, Charlotte Mason has an afro.”

Starting Small

Teens and Adults

Increasingly, we’re living in a world of shortcuts. Everything moves so fast today that often the most rewarding behavior is cutting corners, finding a faster and easier way to get to your destination. Perhaps that’s all well and good, I mean, efficiency never hurt anyone. But what then happens when you encounter something for which there is no shortcut, no quick way to success? Well, unless you’ve prepared yourself, you just end up ramming into a brick wall. More and more, our young adults are doing just that. They’re coming upon some of the key points of transition as they move into adulthood and are finding themselves ill prepared to make those changes, and worse, they don’t even know how to start solving the problem. In this session Trent asks what exactly we can do to help these young adults. What practices and tools can we equip them with? What kind of examples can we set? And how exactly can we communicate these practices to them? Trent seeks to answer these questions by looking at his own experiences, and by communicating some of the wise advice he received from great thinkers and personal counselors alike.

Beyond Reproach

Teens and Adults

What does it take to make a difference? Is it a matter of sheer indomitable willpower? Does it require abnormal intellect, erudite communication skills, or some other exceptional talent? Sometimes it does. There are plenty of examples of tremendously impactful figures who demonstrated phenomenal capability in one or all of these respects, and found themselves in the perfect time and place to make a difference. But is that really the only way one can have animpact? What if the difference we seek to make isn’t a matter of changing the world, the west, or the nation, it was instead about making an impact upon the ones closest to you? Upon the people who you randomly interact with on a daily basis and never see again? In this session, Trent asks all of these questions and more, with the aim of demonstrating how we can create a tangible difference in the places that we live. To do so, he relies on notable historical figures who lived in an exemplary manner, and whose hard work, attention to detail, and general magnanimity allowed them to make an outsized impact, all while starting small.

How to Kill a Culture and How to Save One

Saturday, May 16 – 10:15am-11am

Lets face it, things out there are pretty bleak nowadays. Every time you turn on the T.V, pick up your phone, or even just see a billboard you run the risk of being exposed to the corrosive outgrowths of a pathological worldview that has overrun our society. In the face of this sort of cultural pollution, it’s easy to despair, to resort to cutting oneself off from the culture at large, and in some ways that’s a perfectly reasonable reaction. However, it’s not a sustainable one. Our culture is a runaway train, and if we don’t try to stop it, we’ll just be the last ones to get hit. In this session, Trent takes a close look at what exactly it is that’s fueling our culture, identifying the thinkers and ideas that have undermined the western world and brought us to this moment. Through gaining an understanding of these ideas we also learn how to counter them, not just in the apologetic sense, but in a tangible cultural sense, so that we may build a new counter-culture for the future.

A Bachelor's in One Year After High School: A New Path for Maryland Homeschool Families

Saturday, May 16 – 11:15am-12pm

89% of college-aspiring families are scrambling to reduce the cost and time to a college degree. Dual enrollment is the most common tool — and as offered by the state, it’s broken. Maryland’s Blueprint for Maryland’s Future pays full tuition for public school students, but homeschoolers are excluded. Discounts where they exist run 25% to 50% on community college credit, and many counties offer homeschoolers nothing at all. The rest of the trade-offs still apply: Accuplacer testing, county verification letters, the drive to the community college, and a permanent transcript on a teenager whose first college grade follows them forever.

High school graduation is closer than it feels—and the question “What’s next?” can bring both excitement and uncertainty. Rather than assuming a one-size-fits-all answer, this session starts where it matters most: identity. Students will be challenged to understand who they are before deciding where they go. From there, we’ll explore whether college is the right path, how it can be used strategically, and what alternatives may also lead to success. You’ll also gain insider perspective on what colleges are really looking for—especially when reviewing homeschool applicants—and how to present your experience in a way that stands out. The often-intimidating topic of finances will be addressed in a straightforward, hopeful way, helping families approach the conversation without fear. Finally, this workshop equips you to make decisions rooted in clarity and peace, not pressure—so you can move forward with confidence, whatever path you choose.
